Train. Celebrate. Enjoy (without the guilt!)

The Christmas season is a time of joy, family, food…and let’s be honest, a bit of chaos.
Between gatherings, late nights, and irresistible treats, training can easily slip to the
bottom of the list. But at SCRAM, we believe Christmas isn’t a time to pause your
goals – it’s the perfect time to protect them.

Staying active through December helps you manage stress, boost your mood, and
keeps January from becoming a painful restart. Even just two sessions a week
can make a huge difference in staying energised throughout the festive season.
So, while you’re decking the halls and enjoying the celebrations, here’s how to keep the
balance: train consistently, enjoy mindfully, and swap a few treats for healthier
versions that don’t sacrifice the Christmas spirit.

Popular Christmas Treats and How to Make Them Healthier

🍪1. Mince Pies
Traditional: buttery pastry filled with sweet, dried fruit and sugar.
Healthier approach:
• Use whole-wheat or almond flour pastry.
• Reduce sugar by sweetening with applesauce or fresh orange juice.
• Bake mini versions for portion control.
• Add a spoon of Greek yogurt instead of cream for a lighter topping.

🍰2. Christmas Fruit Cake
Traditional: dense, sugary, and often alcohol-soaked.
Healthier approach:
• Replace part of the butter with mashed banana.
• Reduce sugar by half—dried fruit already adds plenty of sweetness.
• Add nuts for healthy fats and satiety.
• Skip the icing or switch to a thin drizzle instead of a thick layer.

3. Hot Chocolate
Traditional: full-fat milk, cream, and lots of sugar.
Healthier approach:
• Use unsweetened cocoa and sweeten with honey or stevia.
• Try oat or almond milk for a lighter texture.
• Add cinnamon or a dash of vanilla for flavour without calories.
• Swap whipped cream for frothed milk.

🥨4. Gingerbread Cookies
Traditional: made with white sugar, flour, and plenty of butter.
Healthier approach:
• Replace white flour with oat or whole-wheat flour.
• Use coconut oil instead of butter.
• Cut sugar and let spices (ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg) shine.
• Decorate lightly royal icing adds up fast.

🥗5. Christmas Lunch Classics
Stuffing, roast potatoes, gravy… we know how it goes.
Healthier approach:

• Roast potatoes in the oven with olive oil instead of frying.
• Add more veggie sides: roasted Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflower.
• Make stuffing with whole-grain bread or quinoa.
• Use homemade gravy to avoid the heavy salt and additives of packet versions.
• Choose leaner meats such as turkey breast.

🍫6. Maltese Christmas Log
Traditional: A rich mix of crushed biscuits, condensed milk, cocoa, candied cherries,
nuts, and a generous coating of melted chocolate. Delicious… but usually heavy in
sugar and fat.
Healthier approach:
• Swap condensed milk for Greek yogurt or light ricotta mixed with a little honey.
• Use dark chocolate (70%+) instead of milk chocolate for the coating – richer
flavour, less sugar.
• Add unsweetened cocoa to deepen the flavour without extra calories.
• Replace part of the crushed biscuits with ground oats or wholegrain biscuits.
• Add more nuts and dried fruit to increase fibre and healthy fats.
• Shape into a smaller log or create mini “bites” for easier portion control.

🎁Why Training During Christmas Matters

⭐1. Consistency beats perfection
Even one or two sessions a week helps maintain strength, mobility, and routine.
2. Mental wellbeing
Training helps manage stress, improves sleep, and boosts those “feel-good”
hormones.

3. More energy for celebrations
You’ll feel stronger, lighter, and more balanced — no post-lunch slumps.
4. January becomes a continuation, not a restart
Returning after a long break is harder than staying moderately active.
